You don't know shit
Most mornings I wake up at 5:45
Like most people, I use the alarm on my phone. I understand how computers work, I am a programmer after all, but I don't know how they are made.
I couldn't make a processor. I also don't know how to go about getting my hands on the raw materials required to make the various parts of a computer. I just know how to use them once someone else has put them together.
Next I head straight to the toilet for a piss. Once my business with the toilet is done I wash my hands and face.
I have no idea how the plumbing in my house works. I understand that there is a tank in my attic and that gravity keeps it flowing, but I don't know how it gets to my house, or how it is treated at the water plant. Is a water plant even a thing? I don't really know.
Then I apply some deodorant, get dressed and head to the kitchen.
I don't know how that deodorant is made and suspect that it's probably unhealthy to rub it in my armpits.
I also have no idea how to make clothes or how to make the materials used to make clothes. I also don't know where how the various supply chains that brought my clothes to me work.
Next I head for the bus and guess what? I'm in the dark again.
I understand the general principles behind a combustion engine and how materials are shaped in order to make seats and windows etc... But I couldn't make a bus from scratch, I wouldn't even know where to start.
I get to work and it's the same deal.
The building I sit in, the computers I use, the food I eat.
There is not a single thing that I interact with on a daily basis that I know enough about to be able to recreate it from scratch myself.
That's a scary thought, right?
What does it all mean?
I feel like us humans walk around with this insane level of confidence that is completely undeserved.
For the most part, we don't know shit.
We are all so heavily reliant on the knowledge of other people that the fact that we keep killing and being shit to each other can only be described as darkly comical.
Humans are not at the top of the food chain - the technology we created is. Without that, how lost most of us would be in the natural world is pretty pathetic (myself included).
I think a healthy dose of humility from time to time is warranted.
