You can't pregnancy harder

You can't pregnancy harder

If you've ever had to plan out a large project involving multiple people across many disciplines then you may have heard the following phrase:

Nine women can't make a baby in one month.

This is one of my favorite sayings as it’s both beautifully concise and instantly understood.

There are some problems that can be solved by throwing more people at it, but there are situations where extra man power simply doesn’t help.

For example, if you needed to manually count all of the votes from an election then the more people you have counting, the faster the votes will get counted (though there is of course some additional overhead in managing all of these people).

If, on the other hand, I asked you to deliver a package to someone, adding more people doesn't make it any faster. There is a minimum amount of time you will have to spend traveling (of course the speed will vary based on the mode of transportation).

However, if there are multiple packages to deliver then adding more people will help. So time is a fiddly thing. Depending on what we are doing we can make more efficient use of it, but at some point we will hit a wall where the time just needs to be spent, as in the case of our pregnant woman.

This leads me on to another phrase I have been using recently:

You can't pregnancy harder.

I’ll admit that this one isn't as clear and concise as the other, so here is some further explanation.

If you take a woman who is six months pregnant, she won't be able to give birth to a full term baby the next day no matter how hard she tries. Some things just take time and there is nothing you can do about it. She can't pregnancy harder and get the baby out faster.

We cannot control time, we can barely even comprehend it.

So if you ever find yourself in a situation where you are expecting someone to do something faster, or someone is expecting you to do something faster, but the time is a relatively fixed value then remember:

You can't pregnancy harder.
